JOB TITLE: Elementary Physical Education Teacher

Job Purpose Statement/s: The position of Teacher – Physical Education is for the purpose/s of developing in each elementary school student an understanding of the relationship of good body function and exercise; to motivate each pupil to cultivate physical fitness, hygienic habits, and good social and emotional adjustment; to discover and develop talents of pupils in physical achievement; to develop strength, agility, poise, and coordination in individual, dual, and team physical activities and sports, in accordance with each pupil’s ability.
Essential Job Functions:
- Teach knowledge and skills in physical fitness, health education, rhythms and dance, and individual, dual, or team sports.
- Advocate, model and implement David Douglas School District Educational Racial Equity policy.
- Demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students, staff and families/caregivers from diverse background.
- Instruct students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the district.
- Work cooperatively with other physical education teachers in planning a balanced physical education program.
- Analyze, demonstrate, and explain basic skills, knowledge, and strategies of formal sports, games, rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement.
- Provide individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student, to the extent feasible.
- Provide appropriate safety instruction and make safety checks on equipment and field areas to insure the over-all safety of students.
- Maintain control of storage and use of school-owned property
- Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the physical education areas.
- Evaluate each student’s growth in physical skills, knowledge, and contribution in team sports.
- Maintain professional competence through inservice education provided by the district and in self-selected professional growth activities.
- Select and requisition materials, equipment, and instructional aids and maintain required inventory.
- Supervise students in out of classroom activities during the assigned work day.
- Attend staff meetings as well as serve on staff and district committees as requested.
- Meet the state standards for competent and ethical performance.
Other Job Functions:
- Advise parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of supporting teacher’s expectations, developing methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals.
- Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and Administrative Regulations.
- Confer with colleagues, administrators, students and/or parents when necessary.
- Participate in various meetings (e.g. parent conferences, in-service training, site meetings, etc.) for the purpose of receiving and/or providing information.
Job Requirements – Qualifications:
Experience Preferred: Prior job related experience.
Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required:
Skills in assessing, evaluating, and grading all students in the areas of sportsmanship and skill; planning, developing, and implementing appropriate curriculum and assisting students in realizing success. Effective communication skills with students, parents and other school personnel.
Knowledge of instructional theory and best practices, curriculum, effective classroom management skills, biomechanics of physical education, and state education code and district policies.
Abilities to plan, teach physical activities to students with various physical and mental disabilities; work with students from diverse backgrounds; stand and walk for prolonged periods, perform a variety of specialized and responsible tasks, maintain records, establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parent, other school personnel, meet schedule and deadlines. Significant physical abilities include lifting/carrying/reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, near/far visual acuity/depth perception and accommodation field of vision.
Education Required: Bachelor’s Degree. Physical Education Endorsement.
Licenses, Bonding and/or Testing Required: Appropriate Teacher Standards and Practices Commission license, Criminal Justice fingerprint clearance, and valid driver's license and evidence of insurability.

Terms of Employment: Salary and work year according to the current contract and school calendar.
Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's Policy on Evaluation of Licensed Staff Personnel.
David Douglas School District Drug Testing and Criminal Background check
Per district policy all offers of employment shall be contingent upon the successful passing of a district required drug test and criminal background check. David Douglas School District’s Human Resources will designate where and when the testing will be conducted. The offer of employment will be withdrawn from candidates who test positive for drugs.
