Internship

JOB TITLE:  Internship in School Psychology

Reports To:  Director of Student Services

Position Start Date: September 1, 2020

Job Purpose Statement/s:  School psychologists provide direct support and interventions to students; consult and collaborate with teachers, families, and other school based and community providers (i.e., school counselors, school social workers, private therapists, doctors) to improve support strategies and coordinate needed services; work with school administrators to improve school-wide practices in assessment, prevention and accountability; work to improve academic achievement, promote positive behavior and mental health to support diverse learners; create safe, positive school climates and strengthen family–school partnerships. 

Essential Functions

• Participate in building data team meetings (Student Intervention Team, Individual Problem Solving Team, Individual Positive Behavior Supports Team and district school psychologist meetings.
• Assist in the completion of special education evaluations to determine eligibility in a variety of disability categories.
• Interpret evaluation and progress monitoring data, psychological and psychiatric reports and special education documents.
• Use a variety of assessment tools to assess academic skills, cognitive ability, psychological processing, adaptive and social skills, emotional/behavioral status and mental health status.
• Integrate evaluation data into a clear, organized and educationally relevant evaluation report.
• Support the facilitation of special education meetings.
• Support functional behavior assessment development and manifestation determination reviews.
• Support development, implementation and evaluation of behavior support plans.
• Develop appropriate preventative and interventions and strategies to assist individual students in academic growth and school adjustment.
• Provide short-term group or individual counseling to resolve problems that interfere with school performance and access to education.
• Work directly and/or indirectly with students, teachers, and parents to help resolve challenges in behavior and learning.
• Communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) and collaboratively with students, parents and staff.
• Shadow related staff members (behavior specialist, autism consultant, counselor, etc) as part of the dynamic internship experience..
• Maintain records in an accurate and confidential manner consistent with applicable rules.
• Use technology fluently to manage all components of the job.
• Perform other duties as requested by the student services department administrators.

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements

• Complete all university program requirements to successfully complete internship experience.
• Enrolled in an accredited Master’s degree or higher school psychology program.
• Enrolled in an internship class with a university program advisor.
• Demonstrated successful completion of school psychology practicum experience.
• Demonstrated successful course completion in cognitive, behavioral, and academic testing and related skills.

Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required

• Skills to apply assessment instruments, intervene in crisis situations, provide counseling, interpret test data, and communicate effectively.
• Knowledge of assessment instruments and their application, relevant education codes, state and district policies.
• Ability to sit for prolonged periods, complete a case study and develop an individual education plan, be flexible, work under time constraints, work effectively with staff, parents, students and community, work independently. Significant physical abilities include lifting/carrying, reaching/handling/fingering, talking/hearing conversations, and near/far visual acuity/visual accommodation.

Other Job Functions

Assist other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.

Terms of Employment:  Stipend and work year according to the current contract and school calendar.

Evaluation:  Performance of this Internship will be evaluated by the participating University with input by the Student Services administrators and School Psychologist District-assigned mentor. 

David Douglas School District Drug Testing and Criminal Background check

Per district policy all offers of employment shall be contingent upon the successful passing of a district required drug test and criminal background check.  David Douglas School District’s Human Resources will designate where and when the testing will be conducted.  The offer of employment will be withdrawn from candidates who test positive for drugs.
