ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY ASSISTANT

 

Schedule:            5 hours per day / 9 months per year / About 179 days per year

Class:                    10, starts at $17.33 per hour

Starting Date:      August 30, 2021

POSITION PURPOSE

 

To assist Assistive Technology Consultant, Speech-Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, and teachers in trials of augmentative and alternative communication and assistive technology devices and services; assist AT consultant in the creation of AT materials and management of AT devices and services.

 

NATURE AND SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Assist the initial trials of assistive technology devices and services.
  • Assist in modeling the use of AAC devices (i.e., light tech communication boards, communication apps, speech-generating devices, etc.)
  • Assist in the management of assistive technology referrals and the assistive technology caseload list.
  • Assist instructional assistants and teachers to learn best practices for supporting students using assistive technology
  • Model evidence-based practices to IAs and teachers for small group and 1:1 instruction, with and without AT consultant oversight
  • Attend in-service and workshop training related to the area of assignment; apply the training to instructional responsibilities
  • This position is itinerant and covers all buildings in the district, K-post high
  • Meet and communicate regularly with AT consultant to update and monitor progress towards assignment goals.
  • Works Collaboratively with the David Douglas Technology Department to:
    • Assist in the maintenance of assistive technology equipment
    • Assist in the management of apps on iPads and apps and extensions on Chromebooks
    • Assist in the management of assistive technology subscriptions and licenses
    • Assist in the distribution and collection of assistive technology equipment
    • Assist in the technical support of assistive technology websites, apps, and extensions
    • Troubleshoot technical difficulties, provide technical assistance and perform basic maintenance on assistive technology equipment in the school setting
  • Perform other duties, as assigned

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Must have had two years of college or hold an Associates' Degree or completed the district paraprofessional training
  • Prior experience in working with students required
  • Knowledge of English usage, spelling, mathematics, and a basic understanding of subjects and conditions in which the Instructional Assistant is to provide assistance
  • Typing with accuracy, using a word processing program on the computer comfortable with data entry as well as office machines and audio-visual equipment as needed
  • Knowledge of classroom practices and procedures and school operations and personnel
  • Flexibility and patience in instructing students with a variety of skill levels
  • Ability to plan and organize materials for use in instruction
  • Experience using a symbol system such as Boardmaker, Boardmaker Online, or SymbolStix preferred
  • Ability to work harmoniously with others and to communicate appropriately and effectively, both orally and in writing, with students, parents, and staff
  • Ability to maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students and staff

 

 

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

A moderate degree of physical stamina, with frequent lifting of up to 10 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds required in the physical assistance of students with special needs.  Ability to move freely to various locations within the classroom and other settings (cafeteria/playground).  Frequent standing, walking, sitting, and bending.  Exposure to noise and activity of a school setting.  Exposure to outdoor weather conditions.
